Top 10 Photography behind the scenes tasks

Let’s talk about it!

I see tons of photographers showcasing bts of them capturing clients and wedding shots but I don’t see too many of them talking about the ins and outs of the true behind the scenes work. I would love to say we just pop your photos onto our laptops edit them in minutes and send them in seconds & TAH-DAH our work is done & we just go get a margarita to celebrate! But that’s so far from reality.

The truth is we complete thankless, time-consuming, & tedious work every day of our lives. We photographers spend HOURS working on our computers, laptops, & phones.

Here’s just a few things I do that NO ONE sees besides my husband and son.

  • Uploading + backing up - I upload your photos right away to three different spots. I cannot even begin looking at your photos until a day or two because this takes a while to complete.

  • Culling - I look through every last shot I captured during your session to pick the best ones! I’m very meticulous about this and go backward to ensure I don’t over or under select images. Only the best composition, lighting, and you have to look great + artsy ones are usually accidental so I always am on the lookout for those shots too! This can take HOURS. I use photomechanic to do this in the most efficient and fastest way possible.

  • Upload to Lightroom this doesn’t take too long because I save them somewhere else since I already backup everything three different ways.

  • Applying the preset- I go through and pick a preset for each lighting & color scenario. I then copy and paste to similar shots. The manually adjust exposure and other settings to my liking.

  • Intensive editing - I go through and ensure there are no blemishes background objects that need removed, fix the sky to make it pop more, apply black and white preset to some of the images I feel NEED to be in black and white. This can take HOURS sometimes days. Because I also have to allow myself creative breaks during this process to ensure I don’t go crazy and re-edit all my images because I “changed my mind”. Sometimes you have to sit with things for a day to feel it out.

  • Photoshop editing - I sometimes need to apply even more skin retouching like removal of cellulite or fixing someone’s skin textures, removal of flyaway hair that doesn’t look great and Lightroom couldn’t seem to get right. Photoshop allows more fine tuning and detail work.

  • exporting + uploading - obviously this can take hours to do. Not just for weddings but even a lifestyle collection can have up to 200 photos.

  • Posting - this can take so much time choosing photos & videos. Plus cannot forget to research trending sounds on tiktok & instagram. Everyone wants to see thoughtful captions. I cannot tell you how much time is spent posting. Keep in mind we must post to pinterest, intagram, facebook, & tiktok now! It is A LOT.

  • Email campaigns - I have not even gotten into this realm of work for my own business but I know it takes time because I've sent a few. It is just one more thing on an endless checklist.

This thankless work that takes of 80% of my time allows for me to spend 20% on what I fell in love with. Connecting and capturing!
